Newsletter 9, Term 4 Week 2

Wednesday 23 October 2024

We have been working very hard behind the scenes and will soon be able to unveil a brand new school website!  There will be many new features features which we hope you will utilise to follow school news and events. This term our school newsletters are being posted in weeks 2, 6 and 9, with classroom newsletters being shared with parents in weeks 2 and 8. Please regularly check your inbox (and junk mail – just in case), our website and your child’s schoolbag for communications with important dates and information.  This term these will include staff updates, your child’s 2025 classroom teacher, as well as End of Year Reports. In the meantime, we wish all of our families celebrating Diwali the very best for this auspicious occasion on your calendar.

Teacher Only Day (TOD) Tuesday 29 October – Curriculum and Assessment

As you may have heard that primary schools in NZ are busy preparing for the arrival of the updated NZ Curriculum. As part of this work, teachers in our school will be upskilled at next Tuesday’s TOD to use the eAsTTle writing assessment tool. This is one of the evaluation tools that the Minister of Education is asking schools to consider using in 2025. We will also be continuing to unpack the next steps in our Structured Literacy journey for 2025. We thank you for keeping your children at home on this day, whilst this important training is undertaken.

Staff Updates

At this time of year, schools usually experience a few changes to staffing which impact the following year. As changes become available, these will be advised to our parent community via the school newsletter.

It is with huge excitement that we announce that Avi Jayasekara (DP, Juniors) has been awarded a very prestigious 2025 teachers’ study award and although she will keep in touch with us, she will be out of the classroom for most of next year. An announcement on her fixed term replacement will be made once this is finalised. Congratulations Avi – we are incredibly proud of you! Rewa Rewa School is definitely growing amazing educational leaders.

COMMUNITY EVENTS – Place these dates into your diary NOW!

School Mural Opening –   10am, Friday 29 November

Todd Wano, our kaumata, has gifted a huge, panelled mural which he has painted for the outside of the Hall. There will be an official event for this at 10am, Friday 29 November, followed by a light morning tea. We invite our parent community to join with staff, students and official guests. If wet, this function will be held inside the school hall.

End Of Year Celebration Evening – 5pm, Friday 13 December

It is always a great joy to hold an end of year event where all of our families can mix and mingle, enjoying each other’s company before we head off for the Christmas holidays. There will be lots to share together this year, including a dance extravaganza with every student participating, Christmas carols and an opportunity to view the new toilet block and new modular classrooms (we hope!). We encourage you to wear either your national dress or traditional Christmas colours of red, green and white.  Please join us! As we did last year, students and families will bring kai/food to share, to help us to celebrate a fantastic school year.

Student Achievement

This news, just in, from Goodtime Music Academy: “We just wanted to reach out to let you know that Arush is one of the first students (we have over 1200 students at 40 schools), participating in our In-Schools program to complete our brand new music workbooks! This is a fantastic achievement since we only started the books last year. Arush should be incredibly proud of all the hard work he has put into completing the book!”

Modular classrooms  being lifted into place

New Toilets

Toilets don’t usually excite me, but we have waited so long for this toilet upgrade – the first of 4 toilet upgrades, we hope!

A sneak preview… lights that automatically switch on and off, automatic soap dispensers, hand driers, new toilets and basins and easy to clean lino – every principal’s dream property project!

End of Year Leavers Assembly – 11am, Monday 16 December

This will be held at 11am, Monday 16 December and is a formal assembly where we acknowledge all of our students and their families, but particularly those who are leaving us at the end of the year.

Bike Track & Athletics Field

Our huge thanks to Janine Young and Leanna Miratana for the massive amount of work which has gone into the latest grant application for our athletics field. Next year will see us actively chasing grants, as many schools struggle to secure funding to upgrade their property. If this is something that you can offer help with, we would love to hear from you.

Al, our caretaker, is putting together a plan for a working bee this term so that the final touches to the bike track can be completed.

Student Leaders

This term our student leaders have decided to raise money to help children in need. Students who purchase a $2 Juicie in Weeks 2-9 will be able to place a counter into the jar of the cause they wish to support and profits from Juicies sales will be donated proportionately. The 3 different groups our leaders have chosen to support are:

Local: Rewa Rewa School e. g. purchasing sunhats for those who need to borrow one

Regional: Wellington Children’s Hospital

Global: Children in areas of armed conflict (via Red Cross)

Poor Driving Behaviour

Last week we had a white van – NUK 368 – displaying extremely dangerous behaviour in and around our staff carpark and the patrolled crossing area. We ask that you stop and think about what would happen if a child was hurt due to your actions. In the past, we have taken photos of vehicles and passed these onto our local police contact – DON’T LET THIS BE YOU!

We welcome to Charlie, Eden, Enlil & Harry, along with their families.  We hope you enjoy learning with us!

The Kids Kaukau Challenge is a kid-focused event for the whole family to enjoy on 10 November 2024. Hosted by Khandallah School but open to all! Like other school fairs and community events, families from other schools are warmly invited to join in.

This is a fun run/walk/skip/dance up to the summit of Mt Kaukau. Registered participants get their own race bibs and timing chips. It’s all about participation and giving it a go! A small fair on the school grounds contains family fun, raffles and lucky balloons,  food stalls, a bake sale, and a cafe. We want to get the kids to the top, so we can celebrate them at the bottom!

Registrations are now open to anyone aged between 5 to 15 years. Children under 8 must be accompanied by a support person over 16.

Registration until the 31st of October costs $25.00 per participant and includes a personalized bib. Additional children from the same family get a $5 discount, so the registration costs only $20 each. Click +ADD ANOTHER REGISTRANT to add multiple people to your registration.

Late registrations from November 1st onwards, cost $35.00 and the bib is not personalized. Additional children from the same family continue to get a $5 discount.
