Newsletter 8, Term 3 Week 6

‘Rain, rain go away’ is what I hear most people chanting at the moment. It has been a term of relentless rain, wind and cold temperatures, however, we need to count our blessings that most of us in Wellington have not been as badly affected as those in other communities across NZ. The bout of illnesses which has been affecting many of our tamariki this term seems to have finally turned a corner, with a drop to 10 or fewer daily absences due to sickness for the first time since May and no positive cases of Covid-19 or close contacts within our school for the last 9 days.
ESOL Hui
It was so exciting to finally be able to hold this evening with our whānau. We had families from Vietnam, Egypt, India, Chile, Sri Lanka and Japan represented at this event. One of the outcomes from our discussions was that the group is keen to continue to meet and build stronger connections between our families. We are in the process of collating ideas shared and hope to start putting them into action in the near future.

Our next whānau event this term will be an evening of celebration at 6pm, Thursday 22 September and then repeated at 2pm, Friday 23 September. Every student in the school, all 141 of them, will be sharing their learning this term through waiata, stories, drama and artwork. The grand finale will be an opportunity to view the progress that our 50-strong Kapa Haka Group is making towards their performance for the term 4 Newlands Kapa Haka Festival. We are very hopeful that the new mural for the exterior wall of our hall will be officially unveiled as part of our celebration also. RSVP online here to reserve seating or follow the link emailed to parents. Availability of space cannot be guaranteed without an RSVP.
Hat Orders
Order forms for wide-brimmed hats embroidered with our school logo will be coming home soon, ready for Term 4.
Seesaw Posts
Apart from our very newest students, all parents should have received a Seesaw post this term for Reading. This post is part of our Reporting to Parents, where we share with ‘just-in-time’ progress and achievement for your child’s learning. We welcome feedback about these posts and if you have a query, please pop in to see your child’s teacher and find out more. The next post is due out this week for Writing. We have some awesome work to share with you – expect your child to be able to talk about their post and teach you all about ‘tickle me pink’.
BOARD NEWS
Elections
After an initial glitch in the process, the company managing our elections has been working behind the scenes to make sure that all eligible voters will receive their new voting forms this week. Thank you for your patience. Remember to hand your voting paper in at the school office before 3pm Thursday 22 September. We encourage everyone to vote so that the candidates you have chosen can represent you on our new board. All going well, with courier deliveries and official counting, we are expecting that results should be made available on the last day of this term.
Property
There has been extensive work undertaken on the Hall roof, ventilation system and lighting. The next project that we are expecting to begin will be extensions attached to the main block to provide shaded areas for students to play or work under in the summer months. You can look at the photos on our Office noticeboard.

Property cont.
The board has approved the development of our top field. So, within the next 6-8 months we intend to have a bike skills track and athletics track. This project is going to need a lot of community support, either for hands-on work, such as earth moving or for gaining sponsorship and donations. If you have any connections with regard to digging, drainage, concreting and/or laying bitumen, sponsors, bikes etc. we’d love to hear from you! Our aim is to create a facility that the local community can use, as well as to teach our children life-long skills. i.e. how to ride a bike safely and the importance that ongoing fitness has on your wellbeing.
CURRICULUM NEWS
Health & PE
The annual Amesbury Cross Country for Yr 1-3 students was held last week. Our huge thanks to every parent who supported their child to attend, as well as Charlotte Hills (organiser) and Avi Jayasekera (teacher support at the venue). Even though we are a small school, we still managed to gain some great results competing against many other local schools, including a stunning second place by Curtis (Yr 3) and a fourth placing for Nico (Yr 1). We are very proud of all of our runners who represented our school: Alex, Bella, Curtis, Frankie, Freddie, Heron, Maddie, Nico, Oscar, Ruby & Sithun.
