The last 3 weeks have been all about promoting the areas that help us shine and make us feel good. I must admit, I would never have shone at a cross country event. However, I have huge respect for those who have a passion for this activity – to see the determination, grit and look of accomplishment on the faces of everyone who crossed the finishing line said it all – take joy from pushing yourselves and giving things a go, knowing that sometimes it will be ‘your day to shine’.
Curriculum News
Thank you for your feedback about our class curriculum newsletters which you have been receiving during the term. It is so good to hear our parents are starting to feel more confident about knowing what their children are learning.

In the last week of this term we will be hosting our 3rd Curriculum Hui this year to introduce our community to The Resilience Project (TRP). We are so proud to be the pilot school for the Wellington region, promoting this programme. It teaches our students how to be more resilient through showing gratitude, being more empathetic, knowing about being present in the moment and how they can best support each other. Alongside the University of Melbourne, which has analysed our school’s data on Student Wellbeing, you will have the opportunity to view this and meet the CEO for NZ TRP to hear about what we are doing in our classrooms to promote long term Wellbeing skills. Watch out for the RSVP flier coming soon – there will be free childcare onsite for those who need to use this service. If Covid-19 disrupts this evening, we will use ZOOM to host this gathering.
Community Art Award
Our congratulations to Elin, who entered and won the Johnsonville Mall Shopping Centre Easter Art Competition (under-7 yrs category). Not only did Elin win a book for herself, but also one for our library. Well done Elin and thank you for helping our school!

Celebrating our Environment
Last week we officially opened our Learning through Play outdoor area (Junior Playground). We would like to thank The Trusts Community Fund for their very generous funding grant, our Board for their financial input and all those who have helped to make this a reality. This includes our caretaker Al Pearce, teachers Helen Pine and Avi Jayasekara, board presiding member Naomi Godfrey, principal Jan Otene, CREO and IRGroup. We also took this opportunity to recognise the beautiful mural on our storage container, which represents the many different cultures in our school. Our huge thanks to Avi Jayasekara and volunteers who helped to paint this beautiful piece. We invite you to take a look at the latest artwork by Avi and our students, near the entrance way to the quad. We have very talented artists in our school.
Our thanks to the Official Photographer: Miranda Zander

Board News
New Appointments
We have welcomed Portia France to Whenua Class (yr 3 -4). Portia joins us from Auckland and is really looking forward to working with the Rewa Rewa team. Please make yourself known to her so that she feels welcomed into our community.
Board Casual Vacancy
We welcome Miranda Zander to our School Board. Miranda will be filling the casual vacancy until September’s board elections this year.
New Board Candidates
Thank you to the prospective candidates who attended our last board meeting. Our current board members are very aware of how important it is to ensure that all 5 seats on our board be filled in the 7 September 2022 election. All parents and caregivers who have a child at our school have the right to vote. So, it is absolutely essential that we have a very clear mandate from our community as to who you would like to represent your voice for the next 3 years on the board.
Potential board members will be asked soon to write a blurb for the Returning Officer so that these can be shared with our community. We encourage those of you who are still keen to stand for election to start preparing for this – take a great ‘head & shoulders’ photo of yourself and write 1-2 paragraphs about what you have to offer. Once nominations have been finalised, we will try to arrange an informal opportunity for nominees to meet with their community.
Covid-19 – Orange
We remain on alert and will continue to keep our community updated. Updates are currently emailed to our community once a week. We encourage you to read these so that if we need to move to daily email alerts, you are ready! We remain committed to being open for learning for the rest of this term. However, this will be dependent on the number of students/staff who are affected over the next 5 weeks. We are LOVING having a bit of normality at the moment, where our community can come into school to enjoy viewing quality learning in action.
Hauora Community Group
Our huge thanks to Lauren Hewitt and the many families who recently contributed support for one of our families. Your cooking/baking and kind donations were very much appreciated. Thank you for your kindness and aroha.

Cross Country @ Rewa Rewa school
We couldn’t have had a better day weather-wise for our Cross Country – the sun shone warmly, there was no wind and so many parents and whanau came to cheer their children on, as well as help out on the course. It has been a long time since we have been able to congregate like this and it was so lovely to enjoy the time together. Every student gave their absolute best – we were so proud of you all.
For official photos, please go to your child’s class Seesaw posts to view this wonderful day. Our huge thanks to Charlotte Hills for organising such a great event on our sporting calendar. Good luck to our year 1-3 top-placed runners who will compete at the Amesbery Cross Country in Term 3. Thank you to our Official Photographer on the day, Dave Zander, who captured the most amazing photos of our runners.
We take pride in offering a wide variety of sporting experiences for our children to experience at Rewa Rewa School. Next term our students will have the opportunity to participate in gymnastics and badminton programmes. I am absolutely sure that in the future we will see Commonwealth Games champions from our school, as we have many who have very special talents in sport. Dream big!

Growing a Passion for Gardening
The mud and weeds have taken over the steps to the top field over the years, but our landscape gardeners, under the careful eye of the Garden Club leader Lynnda Bouzaid, are reclaiming them. Worms have been rescued and returned to the bank, along with a baby weta, much to the delight of the gardeners. Our fruit trees and garden plots are also flourishing. This passion for growing plants is starting to spread into our classrooms, with the junior team planting flowers for their fairy garden and getting ready to create an edible garden in their new playground area. I can see cooking lessons coming up soon!

Teacher Only Days
It is important that we continue to nourish and support our teaching team as they strive to offer the only very best to our students and community. Last week on Friday, staff from our 4 local primary schools and NIS met to share ideas, as well as setting in motion ‘where to next’ for our Newlands cluster. Together, we drafted goals for the Newlands schools cluster and will be sharing these with our communities soon. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to meet together, it was incredibly valuable.
On a personal note, I would like to congratulate our school’s workshop presenters, Avi Jayasekara and Helen Pine who spoke to a large audience about their Junior Learning through Play and Structured Literacy programmes. We were so proud of the professional way in which they shared the dynamic programme that they run in our junior class. Their audience was very impressed, so much so, that we even had a new enrolment query.

IMPORTANT 3-Way Conferences (Parent/Student/Teacher)
Over the last two terms, as part of our revised Reporting to Parents cycle, most parents will have received written Seesaw posts for reading, writing and maths prior to their 3-Way Conference. These posts provide ‘just-in-time’ work samples illustrating your child’s current progress and the curriculum level that they are currently working at. They replace the Mid-Year written report format that we used to use. The Seesaw posts will form the basis of any discussion about your child’s learning when you meet with your child’s teacher for the 3-Way Conference that you will attend next week. It is important that your child also attends the 3-Way Conference with you, so that their voice is a part of this process.
Some parents have requested more information about how NZ Curriculum levels work and what a child actually needs to be doing at each level. In response to this, we will also share that information at your conference. N.B. Whenua class will be sent the link.
Online bookings are now open and we urge you to make your booking now using booking code 6c2ps. Please ask your child’s class teacher for assistance, if required. Whenua Class conferences were held in Wk 3 with Frances Reilly. Parents of those students are welcome to make contact with Portia France, their child’s new teacher, to make a time to meet if you would like to.
Some parents have also volunteered to give us feedback about our new reporting system as we trial this in 2022. After the conferences, they will participate in a short online survey to give us feedback on the first half year of the reporting cycle. We would like more parents to join this group, so please email principal@rewarewa.school.nz if you are keen.
