Dear whanau
As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. In this newsletter we recognise and say thank you to the many volunteers who contribute so much to the success of our school. Whether it be spending time with students, capturing special moments on camera, looking after our gardens, dropping off fresh fruit for every child in the school – every act of kindness helps to create a sense of belonging and hauora.
New families at Rewa Rewa School
Welcome to our new families this term. Our roll now stands at 136, the highest it has been in the last 7 years, which we are thrilled about. We believe that a lot of this success is due to the high quality of care, teaching and learning that our students receive. This term professional development for our teaching team has included how to support our English as a second language students, recognising anxiety in students in order to support their wellbeing, Learning through Play provocations and DMIC maths. It is our aim that through this quality PD we will continue to improve student outcomes at Rewa Rewa School.
Junior Playground
Each day we have watched the development of the grounds for this area with excitement and Stage 1 is nearly ready for us to use. We are planning to have an official opening later in the term, but in the meantime, our junior students are going to be using it as soon as the fencing and pagoda are installed. In Stage 2 we are hoping to add equipment, such as work benches and mud kitchens to support Learning through Play.
Help Rewa Rewa Students Become Better Readers
We are seeking some additional helpers for 1½ hrs a week to listen to individual students reading. Volunteers listen to one student at a time for 10 minute blocks and chat with the student about the story, building a supportive relationship with each student. The school has been running PTP (Parent Tutor Programme), for six and a half years now with huge success. Teachers and parents have seen the positive impact it has had on students’ reading progress.
We hope you can help, or perhaps you know of someone who can. It is only an hour and a half (9.10am to 10.30am) on any Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. We will provide you with training and support. If you would like to know more about the programme, please contact Lynnda (tonyandlynnda@gmail.com). Please note: to work with our students, you must have received your first dose of Covid vaccine by 15 November and be fully vaccinated by 1 January 2022.
Gardening Working Bee
The last few months of rain have been great for the school gardens, but we need helpers to get on top of the weeds at the front of our school. If you have an hour or so free from 10am, Saturday 13 November we’d love to see you. Bring your own gardening tools, buckets etc and meet Lynnda in the staff carpark – even the principal is bringing her favourite spade! If you can’t help with the gardening, you might like to drop off some morning tea to our staffroom for the workers. We will be there rain or shine, so if you can help out, please email office@rewarewa.school.nz for catering purposes. Thank you!
ASC – the Y
We welcome the Y as they begin their partnership and new programme with our school this week. We would like to thank all of our ASC staff who, over the years, have worked hard to support those who attend our ASC programme. We wish the final team of Miss Tonni, Frances, Nazneen and Neve all the very best for their future. For information and to book after school care, please book online at Out of School Care – Y Central.
Pack the Bus – Thursday 2 December
Our student leaders are busy preparing for The Breeze Pack the Bus. Watch out for their flier coming home soon so that you can help others and brighten up their Christmas.
